You Thrill Me

A gifted young singer can't decide whether she loves Billie Holiday or Albert Ayler more. What we hear is a combination of both: song-based, but spine-tinglingly out. Melodic and sweet and very dangerous.

This is both splendidly breath'd song-based singer jazz, and also passionately, movingly risky free jazz.

Thank you, ESP-disk. Thank you, 1960s.

Earth

I linked to this, ages ago, it's also available via the wonderful Root Blog and Big States blogs. But here's a new upload just to make my point clear. Sink into the holyness of the long universal breath.

C'est Normal

Possibly the exact midpoint between Bjork and Nico. With spectacularly creative, minimal, instrumentation. In French.

A Kind Of Love

Beyond-intense Sufi drone-jazz sparkle. Contains some real burners, and only one uncomfortable guitar-hero spazzout disrupts the general moody ecstasy.

A Woman's Born to Weep and Fret

I have a pretty vivid memory of buying this on cassette when I was 12 years old and listening to it in the house I lived in then. I'm pretty sure that's not possible, as I listened pretty exclusively to 80s hair metal until I was 13 and a half or so. The only thing I can think of, is, Sarah Vaughan enables time travel.

There is possibly no other singer, male or female, who can compare. There is no other quite like the Divine Sarah Vaughan. If you don't know what I mean, download. If you aren't filled with delight by the third song, you can have your money back.

On the Axis of the Wheel of Life, To Get the Feel of Life

Gorgeous and mellow and sweet. Johnny Hartman was a no-longer-commercially-viable crooner; John Coltrane an up-and-coming young radical. Coltrane sought out Hartman to make this album, which showcases the absolute loveliness of both artists' sound.

Do I Make Myself Clear?

Found an LP version of this in a crappy overpriced-junk store in my neighborhood in Queens. What I'm posting though isn't that (I digitized it but badly, and it sounded dull & quiet, so I downloaded it) but the first half of a CD re-release. (The second half was all newer stuff and bonus tracks, and I really like albums that feel like albums.)

Totally wonderful.

She was a labelmate and friend of Etta James, who duets here on tracks 1 & 5. If you like Etta, you'll like this. If you don't like Etta, fie upon you. If you aren't sure, tell me in the comments, and I'll post some Etta James for you right away.

Not Michael Jackson's Album of the Same Name

Listened to Yoshi Wada- Off The Wall on the subway this morning, and am completely stunned. High-intensity bagpipes-and-timpani drone madness. Not for the faint of heart or timid of ear. Sort of reminiscent of some of the woolier Terry Riley stuff.

On a similar linking-to-Root-Blog-for-intense-drone-purposes note, I highly recommend Sitaar Tah!, in which that high-sparkly-overtone-hiss you hear with one sitar is replaced by a gigantic sinus-clearing wilderness of gorgeous resonant overtone sound using twenty sitars:

(Beware of potential viruses with this link-- see my note at the end of this post)

Both of the above magick musicks may totally ruin some folks' day. And make others'. Or, in my case, just right for some days, and totally wrong for others. So don't blame me if you aren't up for the brain-melt. (But let me know if you love it, though of course Root Blog and Ubuweb are the real sources, I'm just a recommender).

While I'm at it, here's a less noisy but possibly even more wonderful Ubuweb link (which I think Captain Meltmaster clued me into originally- Thanks Dan!)--
Pandit Pran Nath, whose gigantic gentle voice creates universes:

And another Pran Nath link, again via Root Blog:

At this point it should go without saying that I'm a big fan of Root Blog. And, um, cosmic drone.

With the Sitaar Tah link: make sure you have a good working antivirus, I've noticed that SendSpace (the file host) tends to feature popup ads that try to install viruses on your PC! Avast works just fine for me, and blocks it every time. But I'd hate to indirectly cause your computer to get infected.

In fact, let me just say, if you don't have a fully operational antivirus, please go immediately and get AVG Free or Avast Free now. My professional life as a computer geek won't interfere much with this blog, but this is essential and should be done before anything else.

I Got Something to Tell You... Baaaaaby...

A couple years ago, as Su & I were setting up for a show at Goodbye Blue Monday, the overhead speakers started playing the crazy percussion part for 'Funkier than a Mosquito's Tweeter'. I had trouble plugging my amp in properly, the song was so good. By the time Nina's voice came in, I had to know what album it was.

This is it.

Can be bought online, if you like it as much as I do.
