Blues In The Night

Jimmy Smith was a fierce motherfucker.

Here he's perfectly matched by Lalo Schifrin's orchestration, all nonstop spikes and yikes. It's a great combination: surging, roiling, strafing orchestration in combat mode, with the muscle-bound champ wrestling the huge dragon-like B3 to the floor in the center of the soundstage.

It's a knife brawl in musical form. In case I'm not being clear: this is not relaxation jazz.

Home-digitized, from a well-loved record. Apologies for fuzz and/or crackle.

The Single Petal of a Rose

Absolutely lovely.

Supposedly the Queen's Suite was written and recorded as a private pressing, just for the Queen of England's ears only. I'm glad a copy got out, because it's fucking great.

I Cried, I Died of Repentance

Gorgeous songs and high-intensity orchestration. Wish I could understand any of the lyrics.
Heard the title song a few years back on late-night NYC radio, and knew I had to find the record immediately. When you hear it, you'll understand.
